This is an entertainment program for a dinner hosted by President Richard M. Nixon in honor of the governors of states and territories on March 7, 1974. After the dinner in the State Dining Room, guests transitioned to the East Room for entertainment by singer and actress Pearl Bailey. Nixon and Bailey exchanged repartee as he attempted to provide accompaniment on piano, much to the delight of the guests, including California governor and future president Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy Reagan. Bailey was appointed America's "Ambassador of Love" by President Nixon in 1970. Bailey later served as a special advisor to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations during the administrations of Gerald R. Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush. This program is autographed by the trio of musicians who accompanied Pearl Bailey: drummer Louis Bellson, bass violinist Milton Hinton, and pianist Don Abney.
This program is part of a personal collection belonging to former White House Executive Chef Henry Haller. As executive chef from 1966-1987, Haller oversaw the menus for many formal dinners at the White House.
