This photograph was taken by Joseph J. Scherschel on April 22, 1965 at the dedication ceremony for the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden. It shows Janet Norton Lee Auchincloss, former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s mother, in pink, speaking at the ceremony under a pergola made by architect I. M. Pei. Mrs. Auchincloss, who attended the ceremony to represent her daughter, was joined by First Lady Lady Bird Johnson at the dedication. Formerly called the East Garden, or the First Lady's Garden, the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden was formally dedicated to Mrs. Kennedy by Mrs. Johnson during this ceremony.
