Diggs originated the roles of the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the Broadway production of the popular musical "Hamilton," which opened in 2015. Diggs and his "Hamilton" costars were invited to the White House by First Lady Michelle Obama for a performance, workshop, and question-and-answer session for local high school students. Mrs. Obama and President Barack Obama were among the first to hear what later became the opening song of the musical, as songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda gave his first public performance of the number at the White House on May 12, 2009.
