This photograph depicts a performance of the musical "1776" that took place in the East Room of the White House. To celebrate the 238th anniversary of George Washington’s birthday, President Richard M. Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon invited 182 guests to a performance of “1776” at the White House on February 22, 1970 by its original Broadway cast. The musical recounted events leading to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Marine Chamber Orchestra accompanied the actors portraying the Founding Fathers on a portable stage in the East Room. The stage had been designed in 1966 by Jo Mielziner, who was also the scenic and lighting designer for “1776.” This production was held as part of the "Evening at the White House" performance series.
