    This portrait of Andrew Jackson was painted by John Wesley Jarvis circa 1817. Jarvis modeled the painting after a portrait by another American artist, Nathan W. Wheeler. Jackson was president from March 4, 1829 until March 4, 1837. He had served in the House of Representatives and the Senate prior to his time in the White House, but was most famous for his victories as a major general in the War of 1812.

    This portrait of John Marshall by John Wesley Jarvis was done while Marshall was Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Prior to that appointment, he served as secretary of state under President John Adams. Although born in Britain, Jarvis moved to the United States as a small child and spent his entire career as an engraver, artist and painter in America, where he painted portraits of many famous figures. He was the nephew of John Wesley, an influential theologian who helped found the Methodist church.
