Mrs. Carter was appointed the honorary chair of the President's Commission on Mental Health by her husband, President Jimmy Carter, in 1977. During her time in the White House, Mrs. Carter dedicated her time focusing on the issues surrounding mental health, childhood immunization, and advocating for the Equal Rights Amendment, among many other initiatives.

This photograph of First Lady Betty Ford working at her desk in the East Wing of the White House was taken by David Hume Kennerly on June 28, 1975. Her desk featured a special "Don't Tread On Me" E.R.A. flag. On September 4, 1974, during her first press conference as first lady, she expressed support for the Equal Rights Amendment (E.R.A.), which, if passed, would have guaranteed legal equality for American citizens, regardless of sex. She continued to support the passage of the amendment throughout her time in the White House, calling senators, traveling across the country to lobby for ratification, and participating in women’s conferences and meetings. With his wife’s encouragement, in 1975, President Gerald R. Ford created the National Commission on the Observance of International Women’s Year by executive order.

In this photograph, Vice President Al Gore participates in the 1993 Nike Capital Challenge Race in Washington, D.C. The annual 3-mile race is held in Washington, D.C. to benefit charitable organizations such as the Special Olympics D.C. and Junior Achievement USA. Participant teams typically include members of Congress, federal judges, government officials, and media personalities. In 2004, the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) became the official sponsor of the event. An avid jogger, Gore took part in the race ten times between 1985 and 1998.

Mrs. Johnson hosted the luncheon series to encourage discussion of the roles women could take to address various social issues. The topic for the January 18 luncheon was "Crime on the Streets." Kitt, who was invited to speak at the luncheon due to her work with at-risk youth, defended anti-Vietnam War protestors and spoke critically on President Johnson's policies regarding taxes, social welfare, and childcare. Due to her remarks, Kitt faced media backlash and career repercussions that lasted several decades.
